Adele won all of her nominated categories (5) and is the first person to sweep Album, Song, and Record of the Year twice.
In a tearful acceptance speech, Adele paid tribute to her competition and idol Beyonce.
She swept the top three awards at the Grammys on Sunday night—handily grabbing the prize for song, record, and album of the year—but she also took a moment during her acceptance speeches for Record of the Year and Album of the Year to pay tribute to Beyoncé, who was also nominated in the three categories that Adele won.
“My dream and my idol is Queen Bey, and I adore you and you move my soul every single day and you have done for nearly 17 years, and I adore you and want you to be my mummy,” she said after winning the penultimate award of the night. But in her tearful acceptance speech for Album of the Year, she broke down even further—and had difficulty accepting the prize.
“I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful and gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyoncé and this album, to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, was so monumental Beyoncé,” Adele said of Beyoncé’s 2016 album, which was nominated in the same category as “25.” “It was so monumental and so well-thought-out and so beautiful and soul-baring, and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see and we appreciate that.”
“You are our light,” she added. “And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is empowering. You make them stand up for themselves and I love you. I always have and I always will.”
The heartfelt speech brought Beyoncé to tears as she sat and listened from the front row.
Adele ended up winning five Grammys on Sunday night, while Beyoncé only took home two awards ― for Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album. According to Billboard’s Nat Adderley, no black woman has won Album of the Year since Lauryn Hill in 1999.
Adele also praised Beyoncé after “Hello” won Record of the Year minutes earlier, saying, “My idol is Queen Bey, and I adore you and you move my soul every single day and you have done [so] for nearly 17 years. I adore you and I want you to be my mummy.”
Adele’s night actually started off rather awkwardly, when she stopped her tribute to the late George Michael because she felt it wasn’t going well. But it all ended with the world applauding her.
Beyonce copied a Nigerian deity lol.
Beyonce's elaborate golden chained bikini that she wore with a yellow cape and accessorized with bracelets, necklaces and a golden sun ray crown are Oshun's symbols. The golden and yellow theme. Oshun is the goddess of these pendants and bras.
Her golden gown had very close ties to the goddess as well.
And the star's background dancers were also wearing garbs associated with devotees of Oshun.
The cult of Oshun strongly values twins, which might further explain why Beyoncé was adamant on showing homage to the goddess following the news of her pregnancy.
Hmmm Adelle stop listening to those around you telling u Beyonce is all that and a bag of chips. Don't let others political adjenda brow beat u into thinking you don't deserve an award. You won she lost enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI respect both artists, but Adele's 25 has been by far the most impactful album of the past calendar year, and I don't think it's close.
ReplyDeleteIn that moment, I agreed with Adele and knew exactly what she was thinking. If you haven't listened to Lemonade many times over, you just don't how it speaks so much. Love Adele, happy she won, love her Respect for B.
ReplyDeleteAdele should have won. It's like everyone thinks Beyoncé should win and when she doesn't the person who wins feels guilty. I was a bit disappointed she spent her time in the light telling Beyoncé how fabulous she was.
DeleteFirst time to comment here but 25 was like 21. Adele is very talented. Lemonade was the better album. However, I never saw it winning due to the things addressed within the album that many don't and choose not to understand. I loved Adele's speech and thought it was a true show of feminism.
ReplyDeleteCome on you guys this was hard both powerful women with good albums! Mind you both are actually friends! Its kind of like Ben Affleck & Matt Damon if they were up in the same category! One of them has to win!
ReplyDeleteNo black woman has won album of the year since 1999 ...that's a big problem! Black artist win occasionally best new artist and usually in black niche categories like r&b and rap. In the overall genre awards like record and album of the year black artist are constantly over looked and it's not due to lack of quality. I love Adele but she makes a lot of money and sells a lot of records doing black music !!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know any song from Beyonce's album. But I can easily tell if it's Adele's song playing on the radio. What does that say about what I think should win Album of the Year?
ReplyDeleteShe's probably genuinely afraid of the BeyHive..She should be..Any fanbase that would submit themselves to self mutilation to be closer to Beyonce when she injured herself onstage should be feared #Unhinged #CrayCray
ReplyDeleteYou make my black friends feel amazing? Really?
